Linden, Tilia and Phylira

Philyra, the nymph from Pelion, mother of Chiron daughter of Okeanis, loved by Cronus.
The story goes that having woo’d Philyra, the couple are caught making love by his enraged wife Rhea, Cronus’ in the form of a galloping stallion immediately flees, leaving Philyra to give birth to the first Centaur, Chiron. Phylira shamed and shocked by the shape of her son begs the Gods to change her own form, and thus became the tree called Linden and her son the wise and wounded healer we know as Chiron.

Phylira, also known as the Goddess of writing. Before the popularity of papyrus the written word and in fact our first ever writing tablet came from trees, most favoured of trees was the inner bark of Linden Trees.
